Yenew ALAMIREW

Ethiopia's Yenew Alamirew celebrates as he wins the men's 3000m in Milan (Italy), september 9th 2010.

HONOURS:

– 2010 Ethiopia Bronze Medallist over 5 000m
– 2011 All-Africa Games Silver Medallist over 5 000m

BIO:

An outstanding performance, a name to remember?

Yenew Alamirew, 21 (born May 27th 1990), appears to be the new Ethiopian running phenomenon. Within a few month, we should hear about him again without any doubt.

Yenew made his breakthrough in Milano on September 9 2010, winning the   the 3 000m in a striking 7:28.82 personal best with an 11 seconds margin victory, beating top runners such as Silas Kiplagat, Edwin Soi and Asbel Kiprop among others.

Till then, he was third at the National championship over 5 000m and was having a winning streak in the Belgian circuit with two solo victory over 5 000m (13:16.53 and 13:16.72) and one victory over 3 000m (7:46.11 closing with a 54 seconds last lap).

With this mark he established the second best time of the year over the distance. However  his enthusiasm and euphoria cost him the best performance of the year.

In fact, after a first kilometer in 2:30.05 and a second one in 2:33.06, Yenew unexpectedly increased the pace, opening a big gap with the rest of the field, running a sixth lap in 57.52 followed by a 58.76. He then « started to celebrate at 60 meters from the finish line and didn’t understand that he could run the best time of the year » said Silas Kiplagat‘s coach and spectator Renato Canova. He « only ran fast again for the last 30m, when one of the organizers, inside the track, told him to go because he could run under the seasonal best » 7:28.70 by Tariku Bekele. Alamirew covered the last kilometer in blistering 2:25.71.

Very promising, Yenew is very impressive, his aggressiveness on the track and his capacity to change of pace so quickly are qualities that only a champion can have.

One might say: « yet another runner that came out of nowhere« . I agree. However, a few days before running in Milano and after watching him in training, the dutch manager Jos Hermens (Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie agent among others) decided to take Alamirew under his leadership…
