Hillary MAIYO

Hillary Maiyo after his victory over 1 500m during a meeting in Narok (Kenya), April 2nd, 2011.

HONOURS:

– 2011 Africa Junior Champion over 1500m
– 2010 Kenya Junior Champion over 1500m

BIO:

Hillary Maiyo was born on October 2nd 1993 in Sokyot in North Nandi District near Eldoret.

Coached by Jimmy Simba and Joseph Ngure he began running in 2009. He trains and lives in Eldoret at the High Performance Training Centre created by legendary Kipchoge Keino. Kipchoge Keino was his hero when he was a kid. Like many of his countrymen his parents are farmers and he has 2 brothers and 3 sisters but none of them are running.

Running as an individual, his teammates are Hillary Tuwei (1:46.7h over 800m) and Tony Wamulwa from Zambia (13:25 over 5 000m and 28:50 over 10K) among others. Although his disqualification at the 2010 World Junior Championship in Moncton (Canada) was an awful disappointment, his victory at the 2011 African Junior Championship in Gaborone (Botswana) is his best memory .

Running his last race in Paris (part of the Diamond League Circuit), pacing the men’s 1 500m, Hillary got some injuries but he recovered and he is now ready againHis goals for this year are to run under 3:33 over the 1 500m, to win the World Junior Championship in Barcelona (Spain), to be among the top athletes over the world and to make the Olympic team. His dream is to run under 3:29 over the 1 500m.

While he prefers hills and track workout, exercices are the hardest part in running for him. As of today his best workout is:

10*400m under 60sec recovery 60sec.

Finally if he was not an athlete he would have keep studying.

Hillary Maiyo, Africa Junior Champion over 1 500m in Gaborone (Botswana), May 13th, 2011.
