Worldclass Athlete: Josphat BETT

Josphat BETT

Josphat Bett, after winning the World Junior 10,000m Title in Bydgoszcz (Poland), July 9th 2008.

HONOURS:

– 2008 World Junior Champion over 10 000m
– 2008 Kenya Junior Champion over 10 000m

 BIO:

Josphat Bett was born on june 12th 1990 in Kericho. The second son of 4 children, he has one sister and two brothers. While is parents are farmers, both of his brother are worldclass athletes known as David and Emmanuel Bett; the later one clocking 26:51.95 last september in Bruxelles over 10 000m. Currently living in Eldoret, running was his hobby at school. He started running after seeing his role model Paul Tergat compete with Haile Gebrselassie in Athens in 2004.

Self-coached runner, he trains in Timborua near Eldoret town where he runs between 10 and 20 kilometers daily. His training partners whom he consider as « very talented » consist of 7:56 steeplechaser Paul Kipsiele KOECH, 3000m World Youth Champion Isaiah KOECH, Vincent RONO (7:37 at 3000m and 13:21 at 5000m) and his younger brother among others.

As of now, Josphat is running for Kenya Police. His last race was in Austria and his next one will be indoor where he is going to make his debut. His goals for this year is to be in London Olympics, aiming for a gold. In addition, like many of his fellow compatriots, Josphat is planning to move to the marathon in around 2 to 3 years to come.

He consider training as the hardest part in running. Two examples of his best workouts are sufficient to illustrate this:

– 10*800m between 2:05-2:08 recovery 60sec.
– 10*1km between 2:40-2:42 recovery 90sec.

Finally, if he was not an athlete, Josphat could have become a farmer like his parents.
